The best photographs happen when you stop worrying about the camera.
Whether you're preparing for your wedding day, an engagement session, family portraits, maternity photos, or simply a session to document this season of your life, it's completely normal to wonder:
“What am I supposed to do in front of the camera?”
The good news is — you don't need to know.
Beautiful photographs aren't about knowing the perfect pose or looking perfect in every frame. They're about feeling comfortable, being present, and allowing the people and moments around you to unfold naturally.
At SHOTBYZUZU/RIELITY STUDIO, our job is to guide you when you need direction and give you space when the moment speaks for itself.
Here are a few things that can help you get the most out of your session.
01 — COME AS YOURSELF
You don't have to become someone else for the camera.
It's easy to look at photographs online and think you need to recreate the same poses, expressions, or aesthetic.
You don't.
Your photographs should feel like you.
Whether you're photographing your relationship, your growing family, your pregnancy, or simply yourself, the goal is to preserve this particular version of you — not someone else's idea of what a portrait should look like.
Come as you are.
We'll take care of the rest.
02 — CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU FEEL GOOD IN
Confidence always photographs beautifully.
What you wear can completely change how you feel during a session.
Choose something that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.
For couples and families, coordinating doesn't necessarily mean matching. Think about colors, textures, and pieces that complement one another without looking overly planned.
For portraits, choose something that reflects your personality.
The best outfit isn't always the most fashionable one.
It's the one that lets you forget you're wearing it.
03 — DON'T WORRY ABOUT POSING
That's our job.
You don't need to arrive knowing what to do with your hands.
You don't need to know how to stand.
And you definitely don't need to practice poses in the mirror.
We'll guide you throughout the session when direction is needed — from where to stand to how to move, interact, and naturally connect.
Some photographs will be intentionally directed.
Others will happen in between.
Both are important.
04 — MOVE, DON'T FREEZE
The best moments often happen in motion.
Walk together.
Hold hands.
Laugh.
Talk to each other.
Adjust your dress.
Play with your children.
Lean into one another.
Movement creates space for genuine expressions and interactions to happen naturally.
Instead of thinking about holding the “perfect” pose, focus on the person you're with or the moment you're experiencing.
We'll photograph what happens.
05 — LET YOUR CONNECTION LEAD
Especially when you're being photographed with someone you love.
If you're having your engagement, anniversary, maternity, or family photographs taken, don't spend the entire session looking at the camera.
Look at each other.
Touch.
Laugh.
Talk.
Be close.
Some of the most meaningful photographs aren't the ones where everyone is looking directly into the lens.
They're the ones where you can feel the connection between the people in the frame.
06 — DON'T CHASE PERFECTION
Real moments are worth keeping too.
A child running away.
A laugh that turns into a real laugh.
Wind moving through your hair.
A dress that doesn't sit perfectly.
A moment where you weren't ready for the camera.
These things aren't mistakes.
They're part of the story.
We're not trying to create photographs that feel overly perfect or disconnected from real life.
We're looking for photographs that feel honest, beautiful, and timeless.
07 — TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
You don't have to think about every photograph.
Once your session begins, let yourself settle into the experience.
You don't need to constantly check how you look.
You don't need to ask whether something looked good.
You don't need to know what photograph we're creating next.
Trust the process.
We're watching the light, the composition, your expressions, your connection, and all the little moments happening around you.
Your job is simply to be present.
YOUR SESSION IS ABOUT MORE THAN THE PHOTOGRAPHS.
Years from now, these images will become more than something you posted online.
They'll remind you of who you were.
What your family looked like.
How small your children were.
How you held each other.
What this season of your life felt like.
That's why we don't believe a photo session should feel like a performance.
It should feel like an experience.
Come as you are.
We'll create something you'll want to return to.
